HUBLI: Supreme Court has banned the use of plastic as the packaging material for gutkha products since March 1. So is the case with the use of polythene bags. But still, we can see plastic bags and sachets being used everywhere.
`The Times of India' visited Gurusiddappa Kotambari Law College here and spoke to law students on what should people and the government do to strictly implement the ban and discourage people from using plastic products.

Being a law student, I welcome the apex court order. We should stop using plastic completely, because plastic does not decompose easily. Though there is a ban on using plastic bags, many people still use it. This should be stopped, else it will have serious implications on the environment. Laws mean nothing if they are not properly enforced. We have to create awareness on environment among people and then enforce the related laws.

Supreme Court has given a good order, imposing a ban on the use of plastic in daily life. Today, saving environment has become a big issue. The use of plastic will affect the environment drastically. Before imposing the law on common people, we should teach our children the good habits and create environmental awareness among them. Nowadays, shopkeepers encourage the use of plastic bags, while charging Re 1 for each bag. Gutkha products should be banned if they are sold in plastic sachets.

People must respect the court order and implement it properly. The administrative departments of the government should create awareness among people about the importance of banning the use of plastic. Educated people should also contribute to rid the society of plastic. The court should impose the ban strictly, while the police should punish those who fail to abide by the order.

If people in Kumta and Karwar can say goodbye to plastic, then why can't those in other parts of Karnataka? We should ask this question to ourselves. The main reason for the non-adherence to law is the ignorance of people towards it. The court has already banned smoking in public places, and made wearing of helmet compulsory. Similarly, we should respect the order on banning the use of plastic.

Supreme Court has given a good order on environment protection. Now, the onus is on people to save the environment. We should cultivate the habit of going green in every step we take. People should strictly adhere to the order and give up using plastics, while shopkeepers must stop selling gutkha in plastic sachets. It is better if gutkha is banned completely.

The implementation of the order should begin at home. We should be prepared with cloth bags while going for shopping. This will discourage shopkeepers from giving plastic bags to customers. Educated people should motivate others to cultivate this habit. We need to create awareness about the ill-effects of plastic on the environment.

Plastic bags were banned long ago, but it's people who are not implementing the law properly. Shopkeepers use plastic to package food items, putting the health of customers to risk. People should resolve not to use plastic bags, while shopkeepers should not sell gutkha in plastic sachets.
